    Description

A mix of history, vistas and nature a stone’s throw from Como: Spina Verde Regional Park

This tour explores the woods in Spina Verde Regional Park in Como. With 1,000 hectares (2,471 acres) of protected woodland, the park is a little world of its own with countless sites of historical, archaeological and natural importance. It covers the hilly ridge by Como, winding across the landscape like a “spine” from east to west. The park rises up from the Como plains to Sasso di Cavallasca (620 m) and encompasses the territories of Como, San Fermo della Battaglia and Colverde. The park is easily accessible by foot, bike and car; its vast network of trails and paths links spectacular vantage points, places of natural interest, sites of archaeological importance, mediaeval treasures, and bars and restaurants. There are also plenty of areas for exercising or simply relaxing.

Just some of the places that are well worth a visit from Spina Verde include:

    • the Chilometro della Conoscenza (Kilometre of Knowledge) from Villa Olmo
    • the World War I trenches (the Cadorna Line)
    • the Pin Umbrela vantage point overlooking Como and the first basin of Lake Como
    • the Springs of the River Seveso
    • the Spina Verde Ridge
    • the archaeological digs in Golasecca
    • Castello Baradello

Castello Baradello dates back to the Early Middle Ages (fifth to seventh centuries ad), to a time when a network of defences (“līmes”) were built along the border consisting of fortifications, barricades, watchtowers and castles, and Castello Baradello was one of these.

We offer a choice of different tours through Spina Verde Regional Park, including:

    1. the shorter tour returns to Como from Val Fresca, which is a famous and often decisive climb featured in the Giro di Lombardia.
    2. the second and longer itinerary comes back to Como via Baita Pianvalle, the Don Titino scout hut with panoramic views over the lake, Cascina Respaù and Castello Baradello.
